Richmond Plains produced New Zealand's first certified organic Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.  

Our Pinot Noir is made in an elegant appealing style which can be enjoyed when young but will also benefit from a little cellaring allowing it to develop more complex characters.

Tasting:  Fragrant floral red cherry, strawberry and raspberry notes.  A complex nose with earthy savoury and spicy characters.  Delicious sweet cherry and berry fruit flavours with some earthy forest floor and spicy notes. French oak gives subtle structure to this fruity Pinot Noir with a lovely lingering finish.  Enjoy with salmon, roast poultry or red meats.

Vintage:  Grapes bunches were thinned and hand harvested to maximise flavours and fruit quality.  The fruit was crushed and de-stemmed and transferred to open fermenters.  After a period of cold maceration for 4 days the juice was inoculated for fermentation.  Regular hand plunging over 14 days was carried out in the winery.  The fermenting juice was then transferred into a French oak barrels (22% new) for maturation and to wait for secondary fermentation in the spring before bottling in the new year.

Ripe, fruity and varietal with aromas sweet red plum, cherry and a little raspberry; moderate toasty wood layer and some vanilla clove suggestions. On the palate - fruity, spicy and dry with plenty of texture from medium+ acidity and sulphide lees layers; red fruits of plum and cherry return, wood spice and medium tannin levels.

The wine combines lovely fruit purity with appealing savoury characters, displaying lifted aromas of dark cherry, plum, clove and nutmeg with hints of dried herbs and game on the nose. The palate is ripe and rounded, and offers elegant mouthfeel and silky texture, beautifully framed by
polished tannins.
